World Health Day 2019: A call for Universal Health Coverage. Health for all – Everyone, Everywhere
A January 2019 report says that almost half of the world’s population still don’t receive the required healthcare diagnosis/treatments. Therefore, it is well understood why the theme of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is being continued for two consecutive years (2018-19) by the World Health Organization.
What is Universal Health Coverage?
UHC means the access for everyone to quality and adequate medical care without financial burdens. Adequate healthcare means an all-encompassing medical services which comprise of not only diagnosis of illnesses, but educating people about a healthy lifestyle, prevention tips through workshops and sessions, rehabilitation, and palliative care.
One of crucial aspects of UHC is to ensure that people don’t have to pay from their own pockets when receiving healthcare services. This expenditure is known as out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditures. If there is a high OOP expenses for medical services then it can result in massive setbacks for the families of the afflicted. In many cases (in India especially), it can lead to poverty.
The Indian Case:
In India, there is a massive gap between healthcare services in the rural areas. In metro and tier one cities, there are speciality and multi-speciality establishments with top-of-the-line medical equipment providing medical care to a patient base who are paying high medical bills. According to an article by The Wire, approximately 70% of the Indian population are meeting their medical expenses by paying out of their own pockets. The rural perspective is however quite contrasting as many aren’t getting the appropriate medical care as medical establishments often don’t have the required equipment to administer diagnosis. Therefore, this results in a rampant unequal distribution of healthcare all over the country.
