World ORS Day 2019: All you need to know about the importance of Oral Rehydration Salts/Solution

Oral Rehydration Salts or also known as Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is a glucose-electrolyte solution which is consumed to treat diarrhea induced dehydration. On 29th July every year, World ORS Day is recognized to stress on the importance of ORS as a cost-effective and efficient method to counter dehydration.

According to reports, diseases caused by acute diarrhea is one of the foremost reasons for mortality in infants below 5 years of age, especially in developing nations. Additionally, reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that diarrhea induced diseases are the second leading cause of deaths in children of the above-mentioned age bracket.

Diarrhea is commonly caused due to deficient sanitary conditions and hygiene. If dehydration occurs as a result of diarrhea, it can also be fatal. Children, infants, and xselderly people are the ones who are affected by this disease the most. Diarrhea takes place over several days and sucks out all the salts and water from the body, therefore, leading to death due to severe dehydration.

ORS is an effective prevention and cure for this condition. The solution is constructed with numerous types of salts (electrolytes) and sugar which restores the absorption of water and electrolytes from the gut. As a result, the dehydration is either cured and/or reversed as the ORS replaces the salts which the body has lost.

To understand dehydration in children one must look out for the symptoms which are some of the following:

  • Dry lips
  • Little or no urination for at least 8 hours
  • Dark colored urine
  • Cold or dry skin
  • Acute sleeplessness
  • Lack of tears when crying
  • Fast heart rate

There are certain tips which if implemented can prevent children from dehydration or counter the same if it has already taken place. They are as follows:

  • Identify the symptoms of dehydration
  • Make them consume a good quantity of water
  • Ensure that the child is urinating in regular intervals which removes the fat, wastes, and other toxins from the body
